Paper chain countdown printable maker
Pick the big day and get print-ready chain links: numbered, dated, with your own words on each one, sized to cut and glue.
Making the chain
- Print the sheets. The number of sheets is shown above the preview before you print.
- Cut along the gray lines. Neighboring links share a line, so one cut frees two.
- Loop link 1 with the printing outside and glue its dotted end under the other end.
- Thread link 2 through it, glue, and keep going up to the biggest number.
- Hang the chain with link 1 at the top. Each day, tear off the link at the bottom.
A glue stick works, but a short strip of tape holds better on a chain that hangs for weeks.
Questions people ask
What size should paper chain strips be?
Most chains use strips about 1 inch wide and 6 to 9 inches long. The Classic size here is 7.2 × 0.9 inches, which makes a loop about 2 inches across. Mini strips (3.6 inches) make small loops that suit chains of 100 links or more.
Do you tear off a link in the morning or at night?
Either works if you stick to it. Each link here is dated for the day you tear it off, and its number is how many days are left. Bedtime suits "sleeps to go" wording; mornings suit school-day chains.
Can I print on colored paper?
Yes. Choose "Black ink only" so the numbers stay readable on any color, then load a different color of paper for each sheet. Red and green for Christmas or every color of the rainbow both work.
What if our date changes?
Turn off the dates under More options, so each link only shows a number. If the day moves later, print the extra numbers with "Print only links" and add them to the bottom. If it moves earlier, tear off a few extra links.
Will it print on A4 paper?
Yes. Every size fits inside the area that US Letter and A4 share, so the same sheets print on both without scaling. Use your printer's default margins.
How do I make a chain for a very long wait?
Switch to one link per week, or use the Mini size. A 270-day wait is 11 sheets of Mini links, or 38 weekly links on 4 sheets of Classic links.
