Deployment countdown paper chain for kids
A paper chain that helps kids see the wait for a parent to come home. It handles long deployments: one link per day or per week, Mini links for big counts, and markers at the halfway point.
Long waits, in links kids can count
Deployments are long, so the chain starts in Mini size: 26 links per sheet. A 180-day wait is 7 sheets. A 270-day wait is 11. If that is too many links to hang, switch to one link per week: 270 days becomes 38 links, each one a week closer.
Halfway and every hundred are marked on their links ("Halfway there!", "Down to 100!"). Those are good days for a call, a treat or a care package. The "While we wait" list has 32 small things to do together, such as recording a video, measuring height to show later or making the homecoming sign.
When the homecoming date moves
Dates move, so this chain prints numbers without dates. If homecoming slips, set the new date, open More options and print only the extra links (for example, links 151 to 160 if 150 were left). Add them to the bottom of the chain and every number is right again. If the date comes sooner, tear off the extra links together and celebrate.
The last sheet is filled with spare blank strips for writing in extra links by hand.
Questions people ask
How do I make a countdown chain for a 9-month deployment?
About 270 links: 11 sheets of Mini links, one torn off each day. If that is too long for your kids, use one link per week: 38 links on 4 sheets of Classic links.
What if the homecoming date changes?
Keep dates off the links (the default here). If the date moves later, print only the extra numbers and add them to the bottom. If it moves earlier, remove the extra links. The numbers stay right either way.
Should we count days or weeks?
Young children usually do better with daily links and a short chain, so some families start the daily chain in the last month or two and use weekly links before that.
What can kids do on each link?
Small things that keep them connected: draw a picture to mail, look at the moon, pack something for a care package, practice a handshake for homecoming. Pick "While we wait" under Words on each link.
Can I use it for a training course, a work trip or a retirement countdown?
Yes. Change the date and the wording in "Counting down to". Weekly links suit a long wait to a retirement date.
